Eric Ravilious, Lighthouses at Newhaven, 1935
Lighthouses at Newhaven was painted by Eric Ravilious in 1935. It depicts a scene from Newhaven port harbour which still operates a cross channel ferry today. Ravilious often made paintings of this area of East Sussex when staying nearby with artist and friend Peggy Angus. He was drawn to Newhaven for its busy port, ships, and industrial machinery, nestled in the South Downs. All of the Ravilious paintings featured on the trail are in the collection of Towner Eastbourne, along with a large number of Ravilious’s other paintings, ceramics, wood engravings and archive items.
During a later Newhaven visit, in 1940, he made six paintings of this coastal town, now heavily fortified due to its targeting as part of Operation Sea Lion, the planned invasion of Britain by German forces. Climbing up to the fort, he painted its ditches and retaining walls perched on the cliffs and overlooking the beach scattered with barbed wire and harbour with military ships and long searchlight beams. A number of these Coastal Defence works are now held in the collections of the Imperial War Museum and Aberdeen Art Gallery.

MORE ABOUT NEWHAVEN
The Sidings also hosts an exhibition by Seahaven Academy students, Jake Beaumont, Jacob Marsh, Nicolas Graczyk, Ben Rickards, and Sam Turnbull in response to the Ravilious paintings. The mixed media prints combine an essence of the Ravilious pieces studied in workshops with printmaker Emma Taylor, capturing the modern day working neighbourhood that the students know and love.
Check social media and the website for a range of events and activities associated with the trail, at the Hillcrest Centre, the Hope Inn, Marine Workshops, and an exhibition of the trail Ravilious paintings at Towner Eastbourne.
