Textile Art and works on paper by Lucy Farrant exploring decay and rebirth with a reference to human and organic forms. Cloth, paper and garment pieces are deconstructed, burnt, buried and shot. Sometimes they are left fragile as fragments, sometimes reconstructed into new forms.

Developed through the unique context of Newhaven’s BN9 Marine Workshops, the selected artists explore the site’s histories, industries, ecologies and communities, examining relationships between people, place, exchange and collaboration.

An exhibition of large-scale works exploring the relationship between inner and outer worlds through colour. Johanna Berger (MA Fine Art, UAL), UK/Chile, is a painter, creative therapist and art teacher, who has worked internationally for over 20 years, and currently lives in Brighton. Coming into Light is an exciting exhibition of her new work.

WILDER SHORES OF LOVE

An exhibition of experimental work on video by writer / theatremaker Mark C. Hewitt, made in collaboration with digital artist Matt Parsons. Shown on loops, the installation includes new work in progress, Wilder Shores of Love; the noirish surrealistic b/w collection, Les Coffrets; and the award-winning apocalyptic Freudian mash-up, Songs of the Chambermaids. Artists talk on Saturday 31st October at 2pm.

THE SUSSEX 2026: SHELTER

The Sussex, an annual major showcase of Sussex-linked artists and makers produced by Sussex Contemporary, returns for the fifth consecutive year.

The open call for The Sussex 2026 revolves around the theme of Shelter. As the world around us shifts ecologically, socially and personally, the questions of where we find shelter and how we shape our habitats have never felt more urgent or more universal.

Artists are invited to explore these powerful themes, exploring the meanings of home, protection and belonging in ways that are as broad and imaginative as the words themselves. Submissions will then be judged and selected for the final exhibition by a leading panel of judges. Find out more and enter by 14th September here.

Not Forgotten displays the work of two artists who remember in different ways. Veronica Van Eijk finds that nature and her garden bring back memories. Her large paintings start as ‘in situ’ gestural and spontaneous sketches recording the mood, the light, sounds and atmosphere, which her excellent visual recall allow her to interpret in the studio. Michèle Findlay replays significant events of her life through story telling images crafted partly through memory but reconstructed symbolically to convey the impact of life’s experience.

This exhibition reflects these different styles: Michèle’s works is contained within a closed space, reflecting the internal source of her memories, Veronica’s is displayed in the open, unbounded and in the light, recalling the moment of inspiration. Both Michèle and Veronica were born and grew up abroad, in the adjoining countries of Belgium and Holland which has engendered a sisterly kinship and view point which their work may or may not reveal. Only the onlooker can judge.

A major solo exhibition unfolding as a pageant of ruin, ritual, and renewal rooted in Newhaven’s seafaring past. Painting and drawing becomes a visionary act within Ovid’s metamorphoses where a cast of sunken admirals, ecstatic fools, and grotesque mystics drift through mental collapse toward moments of clarity, humour, and transcendence.
