How have perceptions of Newhaven changed over the years?
Perceptions have become increasingly positive. Where the town was once seen as just an industrial and port location, there’s now a real sense of momentum around regeneration of the town centre and business growth. Initiatives like the Town Centre Revitalisation Fund have made a visible difference.
Our clients and visitors are noticing a more attractive and welcoming high street, with new cafes, independent shops and refurbished historic buildings. Our own Grade II Listed building reflects that wider ambition for Newhaven to be more than a place to work, it’s a vibrant destination too.
What future opportunities do you see for local businesses as regeneration continues across the town?
Local businesses have exciting opportunities to grow and develop. Attracting new investment while supporting established businesses will help build a stronger and more resilient local economy.
With support from NEZ and improvement to town centre amenities, including the Newhaven Hub development, businesses can benefit from increased footfall and new employment opportunities.
We’re proud to be serve our local community and build on our long-standing and prestigious reputation, as Newhaven grows.
What’s your favourite place in Newhaven?
One of my favourite spots is Mamoosh on the quayside. Sitting there on a summer’s day, with the bustle of people and boats passing by is something very special.
There are also so many outdoor spaces to enjoy, from Denton Island and the beach to the marina and Newhaven Fort. All of these places are benefitting from regeneration support and feeling increasingly well-used and loved.
What would you say is the town’s best kept secret?
The hidden network of tunnels known as HMS Forward, hidden beneath South Heighton Hill. They’re currently fenced off and in decline, but it would be wonderful to see this historic site preserved.
Another hidden gem is Tide Mills. The ruins and natural surroundings tell a fascinating story of Newhaven’s past and offer some beautiful coastal walks.
And of course, we’re lucky to have sea and countryside on our doorstep. Walking over the Denton Hills, you can see from Newhaven to Seaford, often spotting the ferry heading to Dieppe. Sometimes the sea is so rough that you can see the waves crashing over the harbour wall from the top of the hills.
Tell us about your hopes for Newhaven’s future?
I’ve lived in Denton, Newhaven for forty years and I’ve seen many changes, some positive and some challenging. With the Newhaven Revitalisation Plan and The Newhaven Neighbourhood Plan 2017-2030, the future feels genuinely exciting. The town is thriving again and there’s real enthusiasm for business growth.
Housing development must be matched with strong infrastructure and access to local employment, and we’re starting to see that take shape through projects like the Newhaven hub. I’m passionate about investing in the town’s future and especially in opportunities for young people. I’d also love to see the harbour developed further, with restaurants and cafes similar to those at the Dieppe Harbour.
How has Newhaven Enterprise Zone funding supported Barwells?
Newhaven Enterprise Zone funding helped us renovate the frontage of our Grade II listed building at 19 High Street. We’re immensely proud of the building and its position as a focal point in the town centre.
The restoration was carried out carefully and sympathetically, following the guidance of local conservation officers and delivered by G.C Building Preservations Ltd. Barwells has been based in Newhaven since 1975 and completing this project feels like an important milestone for us.
What do you value most about being in Newhaven’s town centre?
Newhaven town centre has a thriving and supportive community. There’s a strong network of small, family run businesses, a working harbour, a local fishing community and excellent links by rail and ferry.
We also have a fantastic community centre offering activities for all and a growing cultural scene. Barwells supports local initiatives including the RNLI, local artists and the Christmas Market. As regeneration continues, the opportunities for future growth feel very real.
What are your views on the Town Centre Revitalisation Fund and its benefits?
It is playing a vital role in encouraging people to stop, explore and spend time in Newhaven.
By encouraging tourism and footfall, the fund helps strengthen local businesses and supports the long-term vibrancy of the town. Newhaven really is becoming a place people want to be.
