The transformation of Railway Quay in Newhaven into a new gateway for the town is making good progress. Sussex-based contractors OSM are aiming to complete the development by 12 May so that the site can be fully operational for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May.
Railway Quay is the area between the former UTC building and Railway Club and will start with the opening of a new café. This will be followed by further development phases which could include other visitor attractions and opportunities for micro-business start-ups.
The Newhaven Coffee House should be taking up a lease to operate the café and we are in discussions with the Sussex Community Development Association to develop an activity hub for the site and the Newhaven Gig Rowing Club to develop water based activities. The Newhaven Enterprise Zone will help to oversee the future development of the whole site and how it can support future investments into the adjacent former UTC building and the Town Centre.
The site is aiming to be an exemplar of sustainability, using recycled and low embedded carbon materials for construction, generating its own on site power, installing water saving measures, creating insect friendly green spaces and having a climate-friendly and ethical food and drinks on offer.
The site will also help connect people with the rich heritage that Newhaven and the surrounding area has. A photo library and time lapse film is being curated which will be shared in future updates.
