The Society was originally established in 1924 by twenty prominent London artists looking for respite and inspiration in the Sussex countryside, and set up as a contemporary to The Bloomsbury Group. They are now the longest running group of exhibiting artists in the county. Today SSP keep to traditional techniques of portrait, landscape, still life painting and observational drawing, print making, sculpting, contemporary abstraction and illustration. Many of their artists teach and sustain solo careers as well as actively exhibiting together throughout the year.

Community arts organisation Hospitable Environment return with the second Emerging Sussex; the Sussex-wide open call exhibition for young artists and makers aged 14-25. This year’s theme – set by a youth panel – is Curious Minds, and young creatives are invited to enter up to three works in the exhibition for free. Work can be in any media and exhibitors will have the chance to win prizes of courses, mentoring, exhibition opportunities, memberships and art materials from some brilliant local creative partners including Look Again, Sussex Contemporary, Cement, Newhaven Art Projects, The Pilgrim Potter, Eastbourne Studio Pottery, UDSO and others.

As part of their third public exhibition, and in partnership with Hospitable Environment’s Emerging Sussex Youth Open Call, FTGS host a free Private View event – part of their vision for art as a tool for building community and inspiring action.

The private view is in fact not at all private, and FTGS host a late opening of their exhibition with free food and drinks from their event sponsors, live music from Dylan Gates, live poetry and spoken word from their artists, a talk from FTGS and some fantastic conversations and connections.

Enjoy a lively evening at the Marine Workshops where both exhibition spaces will be open and full of extraordinary talent from young creatives from across Sussex. Discover Emerging Sussex Young Artists Open Call in the panoramic BN9 Studio on the top floor, and FTGS in the ground floor Atrium. Free to attend and open to all, everyone is welcome.

Join us for a morning of tips, tricks and reviews as we delve into what makes a great portfolio. Starting with a short presentation, we’ll run through some principles and guidance when it comes to laying out ideas and projects. Plus one to one sessions, to talk through projects, the layout and order of the folio plus any questions along the way. Whether you’re applying to university or entering the first stages of a design or creative career, this session is open to any creatives aged 14-25 who are looking for advice on how to share their work and creativity.

– Ask questions! Anything goes. Don’t be afraid to ask away, whether that’s about specific projects or the industry in general

Bethany Plummer is a brand designer and printmaker from Cornwall and have spent the last 12 years working at design agencies in London and Brighton, most recently at Baxter & Bailey a brand and digital agency based in Brighton’s North Laine. I love to work on projects that make a positive impact and have been lucky enough to work on a range of branding projects and campaigns for garden centres, parks, museums, charities, universities, restaurants and hotels. From designing stamps for the Royal Mail to working on a visual identity for London’s famous parks – every day is always different. Alongside my day job, I also love to print at my local screenprint studio, using paper stencils, simple graphic shapes and pastel palettes. In a fast-moving digital world, nothing is better than getting back to analogue processes that force you to slow down and make things by hand.

Not Forgotten displays the work of two artists who remember in different ways. Veronica Van Eijk finds that nature and her garden bring back memories. Her large paintings start as ‘in situ’ gestural and spontaneous sketches recording the mood, the light, sounds and atmosphere, which her excellent visual recall allow her to interpret in the studio. Michèle Findlay replays significant events of her life through story telling images crafted partly through memory but reconstructed symbolically to convey the impact of life’s experience.

This exhibition reflects these different styles: Michèle’s works is contained within a closed space, reflecting the internal source of her memories, Veronica’s is displayed in the open, unbounded and in the light, recalling the moment of inspiration. Both Michèle and Veronica were born and grew up abroad, in the adjoining countries of Belgium and Holland which has engendered a sisterly kinship and view point which their work may or may not reveal. Only the onlooker can judge.

Painting and drawing becomes a visionary act within Ovid’s metamorphoses where a cast of sunken admirals, ecstatic fools, and grotesque mystics drift through mental collapse toward moments of clarity, humour, and transcendence.
